Medications for Type 2 Diabetes
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body processes blood sugar (glucose). While lifestyle changes like a healthy diet and regular exercise are essential, many people also need medications to control their blood sugar levels effectively.
There are several types of medications used to manage type 2 diabetes:
- Metformin – This is usually the first medication prescribed. It helps the body use insulin more effectively and reduces glucose production in the liver.
- Sulfonylureas – These drugs stimulate the pancreas to release more insulin. Examples include glipizide and glyburide.
- DPP-4 Inhibitors – These help increase insulin levels and decrease the amount of glucose made by the liver. Sitagliptin is one common example.
- GLP-1 Receptor Agonists – These injectable drugs help slow digestion, reduce appetite, and promote insulin release. Examples include liraglutide and semaglutide.
- SGLT2 Inhibitors – These medications help the kidneys remove excess glucose through urine. Canagliflozin and dapagliflozin are examples.
- Insulin Therapy – In some cases, insulin injections may be required, especially if blood sugar levels remain high despite oral medications.
It’s important to work with a doctor to choose the right medication based on individual health needs, side effects, and other medical conditions. Regular monitoring and adjustments are often necessary to keep diabetes under control.
